Uncle Possum Hillsborough Family Fun Fest and ‘Triathlon’
THE POSSUM IS...
The Uncle Possum is a low-key, family-friendly celebration of summer that takes place every year in beautiful Hillsborough, NC, ancestral stomping grounds of race namesake and marsupial bon vivant Col. Cornelius J. Possum. 'The Possum' consists of a:
-
~3 mile, 1 mile or 100 yd run/walk
-
~1 to ~15 mile bike ride
-
~500 yard inner tube float
-
t-shirt making, face painting, pin the tail on the possum, etc. for the young and young-at-heart
After the inner tube float, a celebratory barbecue is held to toast our accomplishments.
IS THE POSSUM COMPETETIVE?
No.
To elaborate, the run/walk and bike events start when we start and finish when people get back. The 100 yard dash is perfect for tiny possums, but open to all. There is no timing or tracking of first place, second place, etc. If you want to keep track of that sort of thing, I suppose you can. You are equally welcome if you want to just hang out and enjoy the barbecue as you are if you want to do all events.
IS IT ALL SWEAT, ALL THE TIME?
Not at all...although we hope for hot and steamy weather always, the time before and between events is filled with t-shirt making, games, possum-related (and unrelated) trivia, and general shenanigans. If you're sweating during the inner tube float, you are doing something wrong. Both the run/walk and bike portions are designed with options to accommodate little folks or grown folks who want to some sweating but not ALL the sweating.
